Character Name: Hajime Iwaizumi
Canon: Haikyuu!!
Canon Point: Season 3, after losing to Karasuno in the Spring Preliminaries
Journal:
bluecastleace
Character Background: Here
Character Personality:
Iwaizumi Hajime’s goals and motivations can first be described in relation to his sport of choice - volleyball - which he has been playing and striving toward improving on most of his life. At his chosen canon point, Iwaizumi is eighteen years old and has been playing volleyball since he was a young child. In his third year in high school, he is part of a well-respected volleyball team with a reputation for being one of the best in his prefecture. The sport, as well as his team, is extremely important to him. The importance and dedication that he shows to his team and his sport exemplify his personality in several ways. Firstly, it exemplifies his competitive nature. Iwaizumi states in canon that, not only does he enjoy playing the sport itself, but he enjoys the feeling of defeating his opponents and crushing each one of their offensive plays with his receives. This is a feeling that he states was not always his motivation, but has become a huge part of why he works so hard in his games - he likes to win. Secondly, Iwaizumi’s volleyball playing exemplifies his drive to improve in areas where he wants to succeed. Iwaizumi never slacks during practice and consistently works out and trains in his free time to ensure that he is the best player he can be for himself, as well as for his team. Later in his life (past his current canon point, but relevant still in reflecting his goals), he becomes an athletic trainer for the Japanese National Volleyball team, where he finds fulfillment in physically training other players rather than playing himself. This segues into another personality trait that is exemplified through his volleyball career, which is the care he has for his team (both in high school and later in canon), the effort he puts into driving them to be the best they can be, and his overall leadership skills. Iwaizumi holds the Vice Captain position on his high school volleyball team, but is respected by all of his teammates as a strong leader. He is seen throughout canon giving advice to his teammates, driving them at practice to improve, keeping them in line through firm direction (not allowing any nonsense to take place), and taking them into consideration as individuals to ensure their success. There is even one player on the team who respects him so greatly as a leader and a player, that one of their primary motivations for improving is to impress and/or surpass him in volleyball, as well as in other areas. Iwaizumi has been described as almost a fatherly figure for some of his teammates, and through this, exemplifies one final trait, which is his caring nature. Despite having a somewhat abrasive personality at times, Iwaizumi is often seen caring for his teammates by making sure that they are eating properly, getting enough sleep, etc.. One teammate who he is particularly close to often receives lectures about taking care of himself properly, which can even be met with aggression if Iwaizumi finds that he isn’t listening to his advice.
This leads to another important influence on Iwaizumi’s personality, which is his close friend Oikawa Tooru. Oikawa and Iwaizumi have been friends since they were young children, and have practiced volleyball together nearly their entire lives. Iwaizumi has a strong understanding of Oikawa’s personality, motivations, strengths, and weaknesses, and cites them in canon while narrating Oikawa’s backstory. He is often seen in canon putting himself in the position of caring for Oikawa through what can only be described as “tough love”. As mentioned before, there are moments in canon where Iwaizumi lectures Oikawa for staying up too late, obsessing over game strategies or plays, or otherwise not taking care of himself properly. At one point in canon when Oikawa suffers somewhat of a mental break and tries to strike a younger student, Iwaizumi puts himself directly in the middle of the conflict to stop Oikawa, then gives him a firm but motivational lecture about how he is viewing the game and his own progress, and why it is a toxic way of thinking. He exemplifies in this conversation his overall attitude toward the game, as well as his attitude toward his strong concept of teamwork, by saying that volleyball is not a sport where one person takes the spotlight, but a sport where six people come together to meet a common goal. He explains to Oikawa that his team is there to support him and push him toward victory and success, not to outshine him. This scene perfectly exemplifies Iwaizumi’s strong sense of teamwork and sportsmanship, which is extremely important to him. Given this, it can be said that Iwaizumi is not afraid to speak his mind, even when it comes to difficult conversations, and will take any necessary measure to motivate those that he cares about to reach their greatest potential. As well as everything mentioned above, this scene also exemplifies the care that he has for who he considers to be his best friend, and his strong sense of loyalty, even in the face of conflict, that drives him throughout the series.
Even given everything mentioned above, however, Iwaizumi has his own weaknesses as well. Iwaizumi can be an extremely emotional person. This is most often shown through anger or aggression, which can result in intense behaviors such as yelling, throwing things, or even physical aggression. For this reason, many people see Iwaizumi as an angry person, and fear making him upset. As hard as he can be on his teammates and friends though, he can be just as hard, if not harder, on himself. As stated earlier, Iwaizumi is an extremely driven and competitive athlete who wants only the best for his team, and cares greatly about not only his own success, but the success of those that he cares about. For this reason, when things go wrong, especially in a game, Iwaizumi tends to put a lot of blame on himself, and has even been seen in canon breaking down due to this. This is most strongly exemplified when his team loses a game that will prevent them from going to Nationals. Following the game, Iwaizumi almost immediately breaks down and starts crying. His inner monologue during this time shows that he is blaming himself for the loss, saying that he doesn’t deserve to call himself the ace (and important offensive position that he is known for), and that he’s ruined the team’s chances for going to Nationals. This feeling is only made worse by the fact that he is in his third year, as is Oikawa (who he cares for the most), and that this would have been their last opportunity to go to Nationals and bring pride to their school and their team. The moment is fleeting, and Iwaizumi straightens himself up and holds his head high, but later breaks down again when he and the other third years are playing together later that night in their school’s gym. Oikawa, emotional himself, thanks the third years for the last three years they spent together, and Iwaizumi (along with the others) immediately start crying. This shows also that Iwaizumi is an extremely sentimental person, and once again exemplifies the love that he has not only for his sport, but for his teammates. Following this, while walking home with Oikawa, he stops and declares that he could not be prouder to have him as a partner, that he is the best setter he’ll ever play with, and that no matter what happens or whether or not they part ways for college, nothing will ever change those two facts.
Overall, Iwaizumi can be described as driven, competitive, caring (albeit firm), passionate, sentimental, and self-critical. Although he is not as widely known in the volleyball community as Oikawa, and while he is only the vice captain of his team, he is widely respected as a strong player and a strong leader who cares deeply for his team and his sport, and is always striving to facilitate his own success, as well as the success of the people he cares about. These traits will translate in the personal relationships that he builds with others outside of volleyball while in the game’s setting as well.

You may provide *up to three options* for your initial imprint. If you do not use all three, you may delete the extra space. We recommend including at least one scenery imprint.
Imprint Type: Scenery / Species
Summary: A high school gymnasium, including locker room (if permissible)
Full Details: The summary itself is rather self-explanatory. Specifically, the gymnasium would be the one belonging to his high school, Aoba Johsai, with their banner hanging from the upper track area and other such Aoba Johsai-affiliated items hanging from the walls, school color bleachers, etc. The gym would include a volleyball net, a cart containing volleyballs, and other such items one would typically find in a high school gymnasium (track area on the upper level, basketball hoops, other generic sport-related items, etc. The locker room would also be that of a typical high school locker room - lockers, showers, benches, practice jerseys or uniforms, etc. Simple workout equipment may be present in the gymnasium, such as simple machines (treadmill, cycling machine, etc.), as well as some weights, an area for bench pressing, etc. Overall, just what one would find in a typical high school gymnasium where practices or gym classes would take place.
